Spallation Neutron Source

Canadian Access to the Spallation Neutron Source

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the United States is welcoming proposals from Canadian researchers for experiments on 5 neutron spectrometers at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This Canadian access program will distribute 10 days of beam time across the following instruments in each of the proposal calls from ORNL over 6 years, 2026 to 2032.

Funding for this program has been provided through a McMaster University-led Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) 2020 Innovation Fund award, "Building a Future for Canadian Neutron Scattering."

ARCS | BL-18

Wide Angular-Range Chopper Spectrometer

Illuminating excitations in condensed matter systems to enhance the fundamental understanding of dynamic processes in materials.

SEQUOIA | BL-17

Fine-Resolution Fermi Chopper Spectrometer

Studying dynamic processes in novel systems.

CNCS | BL-5

Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer

Inelastic or quasielastic neutron scattering experiments using cold or thermal neutrons with good to medium energy resolution.

HYSPEC | BL-14B

Hybrid Spectrometer

Measures excitations in small single-crystals with optional polarization analysis.

BASIS | BL-2

Backscattering Spectrometer

Toward advances in life sciences and better materials for energy storage.

Application Details

To apply for beam time at ORNL, submit your application through the ORNL’s General User Proposal Calls: https://neutrons.ornl.gov/users/proposal-calls

Canadian applicants who want their proposal to be considered in “the CFI partnership stream” for the reserved beamtime on these 5 neutron spectrometers should indicate this choice on the “Instrument Selection” page. The proposal PI must be employed by a Canadian institution.

All other Canadian applications will be considered in the General User stream for all instruments.

Due to the limited beam time available for the CFI partnership stream, no single research group will awarded more than one proposal in any competition.
