Dan Neumann is an expert in the development and operation of neutron scattering facilities. In the 1990s, he developed North America’s first backscattering spectrometer, significantly increasing data rates compared to other instruments in its class. From 2005 to 2023, he led the Neutron Condensed Matter Science Group at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). Under his stewardship, the NCNR expanded by building new instruments and modernizing existing ones, playing a significant role in transforming the facility into one of the world’s foremost neutron research centers. He has served on numerous advisory and review committees for large-scale scientific facilities around the world. In 2022, the Neutron Scattering Society of America recognized his efforts by awarding him its highest honor, the Clifford G. Shull Prize “for outstanding contributions, leadership, and vision as a scientist, mentor, instrument developer, and facility steward.”
